The youngest of four children(two older brothers, and one sister),my dad was born on May 25,1919,on a farm,in Alberta,Canada. They soon moved to Hamilton,Ontario, where he grew up.

In 1938,when Canada entered World War II,he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force.,and served his country until 1942.

In October of 1941,he and my mother met. They were each dating other people, but my mother always said that when she saw him,she knew she was going to marry him.And in December of the following year, they were married!

After he left the RCAF,they lived in Niagara Falls,New York;raised three pain-in-the-ass kids;and Dad worked for GTE Sylvania as the head of Systems Engineering.
In 1972,they retired to St.Petersburg,Florida..........
Who says retirement isn't fun?
After my mother passed away,in 1987,he continued to live there,on his own.Tending his vegetable garden and volunteering at his church. When the house and garden became too much for him,he agreed to move over to Tampa,to be closer to us.So,in 2007,he gave his 1972 Plymouth station wagon to my cousin(that car still looked brand new and ran like a charm-that's what having an engineer for an owner does for a car),sold his house(made a tidy little profit, too,as it was before the real estate market tanked),and moved closer to us.
Soooo,yesterday,I call him and ask,
"Would you like to come over for dinner and celebrate your birthday?"
"No,but I'll come for dinner. Is Jon grilling ribs? And is Erich going to be there?Jon's gonna watch NASCAR,isn't he?I don't want to miss the race."
You must understand that grilled spareribs is my dad's most favorite thing to eat,and he thinks Erich is the only person he can have an intelligent conversation with.....
So,over he came, and all was well, until the Rays lost in extra innings,NASCAR got rained out,and I made the bone-head move of not serving his favorite dessert,Coconut Cream Pie.
"What,no Coconut Cream Pie?"
But,Michael, the Elder, called from Pittsburgh,to wish Happy Birthday, and tell him he may be moving back to Florida. So,that made up for the aforementioned disasters.
So,Happy 90th Birthday,Dad!!! Enjoy the ride!!
