Our best family memories are of the beach-

My earliest memories of the beach are Crystal Beach,on Lake Erie,Ontario,Canada. We would pack up the old DeSoto(a pink and black DeSoto, too!) and head across the border(my dad is Canadian,so we just assumed everyone crossed the border on weekends) and spend the day.My most vivid memories of those days are of my father lifting me up over the waves. In my 3 or 4 year old mind,I thought those waves were huge!

Later, every summer,we would spend two weeks on Cape Cod.That is where I learned, from my mother,to love shelling. At low tide,we would go looking for tidal pools. The absolute,jaw-dropping awe I felt the first time I saw a living starfish. And a sea urchin.Being taught to look and put back.Clamming at low tide with my dad.Yep-I can wield a clam scoop with the best of them! And fishing!Learning to work surf poles from my dad.

As a teenage, spending summers in Myrtle Beach! For a teen, that place rocks!I looked forward to it every year.If you have ever spent time there as a teen, you know what it’s like.

JonJ grew up on Madeira Beach,Florida.Boogie boarding and surfing, everyday, after school, was a way of life.Skipping school and heading to the east coast of Florida,if one of your friends heard that there were waves! After school, mowing lawns and working at MacDonald’s to save up the $35 to buy his first Oceanside surfboard.

I'm a big fan of "your" Florida beaches. And yeah, you should be mad. I'm mad as hell! Hoping we all survive it all! On the opposing border - I spent many years of my youth growing up in Montana. Crossing the border into Canada was a special treat. No beaches on the MT/Canada border, but love what the area had to offer me. Many happy memories. I follow your blog and look forward to your insights....

Yes, I'm MAD!!!
Being a native of Florida...and always within 30 minutes of the coast, I am a great lover of the beach. That's what I missed the most during our years of "exile" in PA, TN, AR, GA, AL, and TX. Each of these states had beauty...very special perks...but they did not have the FL beaches. Those states that did have beaches...it just was not the same. And I missed them terribly.
We are praying that the oil damage is minimize...or at least doesn't get caught in the gulf stream...

I love the beach because this is one good family bonding for me. It touches my heart on what you've said "Making new memories with the next generation...."

Thanks for sharing :)

Great post Chris. Loved the pictures as well as the memories. I grew up just a few miles from Lake Huron where I learned to swim. I remember getting dumped off of a surfboard in Lake Michigan and coming up with a head full of sand. I remember my son, at age 2, falling in Lake Superior (about 3 inches of water) and screaming because it was so cold. Then, I discovered the oceans--both the Atlantic and Pacific, and finally the Sanibel beaches. I, too, love the beaches and it's wildlife and I can't even imagine--nor do I want to--what havoc is being wracked on them.

The first time I saw the ocean I felt like I had come home. I still feel that way every time I get to sanibel. I love that I see something new and unexpected every time I walk along the surf. And yes, I am mad as h-e-double hockey sticks, and disgusted, with the oil companies and with corporate greed and with the government and with myself, for creating the need that makes the rest of it possible.
